Overview

The OR clinical case coordinator operates within Springfield Memorial Hospital’s corporate, hospital and Perioperative Division mission, philosophy, goals and objectives, and assists the MOR Nurse Manager in planning, coordinating, and evaluating the activities of the patient care area(s) to provide quality patient care. The clinical case coordinator also assists the NM in colleague evaluations, SENSOR reports, colleague scheduling and additional education needs.  The clinical case coordinator assumes primary responsibility for the facilitation of first case on-time starts, coordination of room turnaround processes and personnel, smooth and efficient case progression, and management of unscheduled or emergent cases. The clinical case coordinator will, in collaboration with the nurse manager and charge nurse for the Main OR, problem-solve, optimize daily operation in the OR, and remove barriers to optimize patient outcomes and patient, staff, and physician satisfaction.  Functions as a patient advocate, clinical expert, and as leader/mentor/advisor for nursing personnel. Actively participates in and supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of major change initiatives.  

Qualifications

Education:
• BSN preferred.
Licensure/Certification/Registry:
• RN registered in the state of Illinois with current active licensure.
• National perioperative certification as CNOR held, or must be attained within three years of assuming the role.
• BLS required
Experience:
• At least five years of experience as a registered nurse in surgery, perioperative services or other similar area required, with demonstrated leadership/management skills.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Must possess knowledge of regulatory and accreditation standards specific to the patient population supervised.
• Attendance at educational programs pertaining to areas of responsibility.
• Demonstrates initiative, excellent oral and written communication skills, human relations skills, and the ability to work cooperatively with others.
• Demonstrates strong customer service behaviors.

  • Clinical Knowledge:

  • Maintains a sound knowledge base of current trends and developments in the specialty nursing practice in order to recommend unit-based changes to the nurse manager and under his/her guidance, implement changes to improve patient care delivery.
  • Collaborative Practice:

  • Assists the Charge RN with daily case and staff assignments as needed.
  • Assists and/or directs staff in order to expedite efficiency in first case on-time starts, subsequent room turnover, and smooth case progression.
  • Conducts constant unit rounding to observe case progression, and ensures tracking board accuracy is maintained.
  • Collaborates with the Charge RN to plan and provide appropriate periods of break and/or meal relief for staff.
  • Keeps staff informed of changes in the day-to-day schedule and assignments.
  • Shows commitment to the development of intra-departmental and inter-departmental collaboration for improvement of patient care, unit efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Develops working relationships with the medical staff that encourage problem solving on all levels.
  • Works with the nurse manager to maintain cohesiveness across all shifts and between all units.

Communication Skills:

  • Encourages and facilitates a work climate conducive to open, honest communication and incorporates an effective feedback mechanism.

Human Resource:

  • Provides indirect supervision of the MOR clinical colleagues.
  • Is accountable for scheduling of personnel to assure quality patient care within budget requirements. Oversees daily staffing to insure patient care needs are met.

Fiscal Management:

  • Budget Preparation:
  • Identifies capital equipment items needed, and submits recommendations to the nurse manager.
  • Identifies and evaluates present and future staffing needs, and submits recommendations to the nurse manager.
  • Assists the nurse manager in the designs and implementation of cost-effective strategies that will enhance effective and efficient patient care delivery.
  • Educates staff regarding operation of the unit and fiscal responsibilities.
  • Maintains sound knowledge base of current trends and developments in health care related to reimbursement issues.

Planning:

  • Engages staff, as delegated by the nurse manager, in developing annual unit goals consistent with SMH’s Strategic Plan and Perioperative Division goals.
  • Develops mechanisms with staff to fulfill unit goals and objectives.
  • Reviews goals and plans of action with staff on a regular basis.

Continuous Quality Improvement:

  • Supports the nurse manager in intra-and inter-departmental problem solving to ensure resolution of clinical care issues and adoption of “best practices.”
  • Assures unit QI data is gathered, monitored and reported and facilitates its use in improving quality and/or efficiency.

Research:

  • Creates an environment that promotes analytical thinking in the resolution of identified clinical problems and the adoption of evidence-based nursing practice.
  • Provides opportunities and resources to encourage staff to participate in nursing research/scholarship activities.
  • Fosters collaborative research relationships with other healthcare institutions and healthcare providers.
