The Maintenance Mechanic/Boiler Operator is responsible for performing general maintenance and operating/maintaining boilers across assigned areas of Memorial Health. This role ensures that all work is completed in accordance with established policies, procedures, work order specifications, and applicable building codes and safety regulations. The position contributes to a safe, efficient, and well-maintained facility environment that supports patient care, staff operations, and organizational goals.
Associate’s degree in a mechanical or science field, a trades certificate, or completion of an apprenticeship program OR 10 years of work experience in a commercial maintenance-related field.
HVAC certification is strongly preferred.
Must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license.
Must be deemed an acceptable driver according to the MHS Fleet Safety Policy (five-year Motor Vehicle Record review required).
Minimum of four years of commercial building maintenance or boiler systems experience.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and other technical specifications.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions and accurately record data.
Knowledge of plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and carpentry skills.
Knowledge of steam boilers and standard boiler procedures.
Proficiency with routine hand tools used in general maintenance trades.
Ability to read, understand, and apply complex building codes, including NFPA and Joint Commission standards.
Basic computer literacy.
Strong attention to detail and ability to concentrate for extended periods.
Repairs and Preventative Maintenance: Perform repairs and preventative maintenance on machines, mechanical equipment, and building systems, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, windows, doors, floors, woodwork, and other structural components, in compliance with building codes and specifications.
Equipment Installation: Install hospital equipment and machinery efficiently and effectively, ensuring proper operation.
Boiler Operations: Operate, maintain, and repair boilers and all associated equipment safely and efficiently.
Maintenance Triage: Triage maintenance requests, resolve minor building and repair issues, and use materials efficiently. Typical tasks include replacing faulty electrical switches, repairing air conditioning motors, and operating boilers.
Professional Appearance: Maintain appropriate dress and appearance, projecting a positive image of the Medical Center.
Safety and Cleanliness: Follow all safety procedures and policies while maintaining effective standards of cleanliness for the facility and equipment.
Disaster Preparedness: Be thoroughly familiar with all hospital disaster codes and respond appropriately and immediately when required.
Cost and Time Efficiency: Execute job functions in a cost-effective and timely manner, developing efficient work practices that optimize time and material use.
Engagement and Goal Support: Assist with achieving division goals and participate actively in department initiatives.
Customer Focus: Coordinate assigned work to meet the needs of patients, visitors, and other customers, ensuring high levels of satisfaction.
On-Call Participation: Participate in departmental on-call rotation as needed.
