Overview

Operates within Memorial Health mission, vision, goals and objectives.  The ER Supervisor for Support Staff is responsible for overseeing entry-level team members within the Emergency Department, including emergency medical specialists, unit secretaries, patient safety monitors, and other support roles. This position ensures effective staffing, workflow coordination, and high-quality support services that contribute to safe, efficient patient care. The Supervisor fosters a positive, team-based culture and acts as the primary point of contact for support staff on each shift.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate’s degree or healthcare-related coursework preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • BLS certification required.
  • Additional certifications (CNA, EMT, PCT, etc.) preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in an Emergency Department or acute care setting required.
  • Prior lead or supervisory experience preferred.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal communication skills are required.
  • Ability to work across multiple sites of care required.
  • Interprofessional relationship.
  • Knowledge of hospital operations and basic patient care support.

 

Responsibilities

  1. Provides daily supervision and direction for ER support staff. Assigns and adjusts workloads to meet departmental needs.
  2. Monitors staff performance, provide coaching, and support skill development.
  3. Assists in new staff orientation, competency validation and ongoing education.
  4. Partners with leadership to complete staff evaluations and disciplinary processes.
  5. Coordinates patient flow support, including timely room turnover and discharge assistance.
  6. Monitors and addresses safety concerns, incident reports and service issues.
  7. Works with ED Manager(s) on recruiting new staff into the department.
  8. Collaborates with ED Manager(s)to participate in quality and process improvement in the department during all phases from planning to implementing and sustaining efforts.
  9. Ensures adequate and appropriate coverage for the unit that considers census, acuity and patient interventions needed to provide safe and timely care.
  10. Acts as a resource to department in problem solving resolution of patient care issues.
  11. Makes round on patients, keeping informed of patient conditions/changes.
