Overview

Perform responsible complex technical work on patients in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.  Responsible for the operation of various types of equipment and supplies in providing assistance and support to the physicians performing procedures, and provides direction to lesser-experienced technologists.  Responsible for the proper operation of x-ray equipment and radiation safety. Performs or assists with department-wide specialized education on a yearly basis for continuing education purposes.  Assists inventory specialist with evaluation of new and existing supplies and equipment to facilitate best practice and financial stewardship for the patient.  Helps the Nurse educator plan and coordinate training and case experience for specialty area.   Embodies the Memorial Health System Performance Excellence Standards of Safety, Courtesy, Quality, and Efficiency that support our mission, vision and values.

Qualifications

Education:

Graduate of approved School of Radiology or equivalent training (if hired before September, 1990).

 

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

Illinois Department of Illinois Emergence Management Agency Division of Nuclear Safety license required.

American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certificate required.

Certification in one or more of the following:  RCIS, RCES, CI (ARRT), VI (ARRT) and/or relevant certification completed within 1st year in this role is desired.

ACLS certification required.

 

Experience:

Has a minimum of five years of experience as a Cardiac Special Procedures Tech.

 

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Demonstrated proficiency in performing all procedures including, diagnostic catheterizations, PTCA interventions, Structural heart, complex PCI with atherectomy equipment, and/or EP/ablation, AICD/pacemaker placement, peripheral vascular cases, and endoluminal AAA repairs.

Completion of radiation safety classes within 90 days of employment is required.

 

 

 

Responsibilities

  1. Performs a variety of fluoroscopic and hybrid surgical procedures on patients according to established standards, policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines. Demonstrates knowledge of the proper operation of x-ray equipment used in the Cath Lab.

 

  1. Remains current with each modality/departmental protocol changes. Is instrumental in developing or revising departmental protocol and procedures based on evidence-based best practice.

 

  1. Operates a variety of electrical equipment in a cardiovascular catheterization laboratory during a variety of procedures.

 

  1. Monitors the patient's electrocardiogram, alerts the physician of any irregular heart activity or change in pressure. Charges the patient appropriately for the procedure.

 

  1. Performs patient pre-procedure teaching. Obtains consent forms signed by the patient prior to the procedure, when appropriate.

 

  1. Provides education to MMC employees and/or community as needed.

  1. Prepares patient for the procedure. 

 

  1. Acts as a circulator in the case, connects monitoring lines, checks pulses, collects and sets up appropriate equipment for the case.

 

  1. Performs as a sterile assistant, assist the physician in scrubbing and maintaining a sterile field, assist the physician with catheter and/or equipment insertion and removal. Dress and/or suture insertion site following the procedure.  Set up arterial pressure line (if needed) or pull sheath and obtain hemostasis.

 

  1. Assists in the use of arterial closure devices.

 

  1. Assists the manager with the validation of staff competencies. Participates in continuing education and maintains knowledge of current and new technology.

 

  1. Records, interprets, and calculates various types of data collected during the procedure.

 

  1. Maintains equipment, corrects equipment malfunctions and reports malfunctions for repair.

 

  1. Instructs technologists and others in the performance of technical procedures, operations of equipment, and collection and interpretation of data.

 

  1. Review and recommend equipment/supply purchases.

 

  1. Participates in the on call rotation.

 

  1. Collects appropriate past patient information for the physician to review.

 

  1. Adheres to behavioral standards.

 

  1. Assists staffing assignments to optimize staff orientation and case staffing for specialty procedures.

 

  1. Performs other related work as required or requested.
