Overview

Position Summary: 

As a member of the Enterprise Leadership Team (ELT)and reporting directly into the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the SVP and Chief Clinical Officer (SVP/CCO) will serve as the senior physician executive of Memorial Health, ensuring the alignment of medical leadership, clinical operations and quality efforts across the system.  This role will oversee hospital Chief Medical Officers (CMOs), the Memorial Medical Group (MMG), Quality & Safety, Memorial Behavioral Health, and Population and Home Health. The SVP/CCO will work to integrate and align clinical operations and establish integrated clinical standards to support system strategies and community health needs.

 

The SVP/CCO will partner closely with the CEO, ELT, and key strategic stakeholders, specifically the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and Springfield Clinic, to improve clinical safety, quality, access and resource allocation.  This role will provide leadership and oversight to the CMOs and MMG physicians and leaders, fostering collaboration to advance care models, population health initiatives, and quality improvement programs.  In addition, the SVP/CCO will establish a high level of trust and credibility with medical staff, promoting alignment of physician activities and clinical best practices across MMG, hospital-based teams and affiliated partners.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Advanced degree (MD, DO) required.
  • Master’s in business administration preferred.

 Licensure:

  • Active clinical licensure in the state of Illinois.

 Knowledge & Work Experience:

  • Minimum of ten (10) years experience practicing medicine in a hospital or health system required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years leadership experience in a multi-hospital, integrated health system required.
  • Previous experience as a Chief Clinical Officer or Chief Medical Officer in a multi-hospital, integrated health system preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with physicians and operational areas to align clinical practices with system goals.   

 Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Strategic Acumen: Expertise in shaping and overseeing strategic plans to align clinical goals and initiatives with the needs of the system and community health. Able to embrace and drive best practices and innovation in care delivery. 
  • Clinical Operations & Standards: Deep understanding of evidence-based practices, clinical protocols, and care delivery models. Knowledge of regulatory requirements and clinical accreditation processes.
  • Financial Acumen: Knowledge of healthcare financial management to ensure alignment between clinical operations and financial goals. Able to link clinical strategies to financial sustainability. 
  • Physician Relations and Clinical Integration: Able to foster deep collaborations and trusting relationships with executive and clinical leadership to align clinical programs and strategies with operational programs and strategies across the system. 
  • Quality Improvement: Leverages analytics to monitor and identify quality and safety gaps across the system.  Deeply familiar with methodologies and approaches for driving and implementing continuous improvement in clinical operations.
  • Community Advocacy: Reduces health disparities through partnerships with community organizations and promotes health equity in care delivery.
  • Driving Change: Acts as a champion for system-wide transformation initiatives with clinical staff. Addresses and overcomes resistance, transparently communicates reasons for change, and fosters adoption of clinical transformation efforts.
  • Behavioral Health & Integrated Care: Knowledge of behavioral health treatment protocols and mental health parity laws.
  • Executive Healthcare Leadership: Strong executive presence and leadership skills to build high performing clinical teams, fostering collaboration within and across sites of care, and promoting a culture of accountability. Strong strategic acumen for developing clinical programs, designing and expanding services, and optimizing workforce to meet patient care demands. 

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities & Duties: 

  • Builds trusting and collaborative work relationships with CEO, ELT, clinical and administrative leadership to shape and execute system-wide clinical strategies in support of Memorial Health strategic goals and community health needs.   
  • Provides strategic direction and guidance to hospital CMOs and MMG leadership to ensure integrated, efficient and effective delivery of care across Memorial Health sites of care. Develops and implements system-wide clinical policies, procedures and protocols resulting in high quality, patient-centered care. 
  • Aligns quality and safety initiatives with organizational goals and regulatory requirements. Holds self and team accountable to quality and safety performance across sites of care and drives scalable, measurable improvements across the system. 
  • Evaluates and oversees medical practices, protocols and clinical policies across the system, guiding on best practices for patient care. Offers sound medical judgment during complex or challenging cases and provides expert guidance on clinical response strategies.
  • Oversees physician and Advanced Practice Provider recruitment, contract negotiations, credentialing and overall retention strategies to maintain clinical excellence across sites of care. Partners with the Medical Executive Committees to address medical staff clinical competency, performance and/or peer review issues.
  • Builds and maintains a high performing, engaged leadership team, leading to a cohesive, collaborative culture across sites of care. Provides leadership and mentorship to clinical staff, and fosters a work environment which attracts, retains and engages a high performing workforce.  Oversees professional development and CME programs in support of system goals and patient care standards. 
  • Partners closely with Memorial Health SVP & Chief Operations Officer (SVP/COO) to connect and drive initiatives to improve effectiveness and efficiency of clinical operations. Ensures patient care and quality initiatives compliment SVP/COO’s operational priorities and strategies. 
  • Acts as a champion for system transformation initiatives (i.e. Epic EHR system implementation) and ensures clinical workflow alignment and usability for new technologies. Promotes the adoption of best practices and innovative technologies to improve care delivery, operational efficiency, and patient experience. 
  • Represents the health system within the Central IL community, developing and enhancing relationships with external stakeholders, most notably Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine and Springfield Clinic. Aims to understand the needs of the broader community and deeply collaborates with external partners to bridge gaps between needs and clinical services.  Evaluates and acts on opportunities for partnership which will improve safety, quality, access and efficient use of organizational resources.
  • Ensures clinical workflows, protocols and documentation practices adhere to all regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies governing health care delivery. Monitors compliance, proactively identifies gaps, and oversees corrective actions to mitigate risk of non-compliance.
