Overview

The O.R. clinical pharmacist provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care, including drug distribution and clinical services.  The O.R. Clinical Pharmacist will manage satellite operations in the most cost effective manner, directing day-to-day operations and continuously improving service to meet customer needs.  The OR clinical pharmacist monitors drug therapies in the peri-operative setting for each patient and collaborates with physicians, CRNAs and other healthcare providers to identify optimal alternatives if and when needed in order to provide excellence in medication related care.

Qualifications

Education:

Graduate of an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy required.

Pharm. D. required; a B.S degree with at least 5 years hospital based, patient care experience may be considered in lieu of Pharm. D.

 

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

Current pharmacist license in the State of Illinois required.

Advanced Training/Certification (Residency / Board Certification) is preferred

Lean Six Sigma White Belt certification required within 12 months of hire /transfer.

 

Experience:

One year Memorial Medical Center Experience or prior OR experience preferred

 

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Demonstrates excellent communication and organizational skills
Demonstrate commitment to continuous development in pharmacy practice
Demonstrate strong leadership skills especially in the area of clinical pharmacy practice

 

 

Responsibilities

  1. Proactively assesses prescribing to promote the best use of medications and promotes more cost effective drug regimens in the peri-operative setting.

 

  1. As needed, serves as a pharmacy representative to various Medical Center committees or work groups as they relate to clinical pharmacy practice
  • Provides Pharmacy & Therapeutic Committee support through presentations for formulary management or quality improvement

 

  1. Ensures the timely and accurate dispensing of medications from pharmacy areas to all O.R. areas

  1. Participates in ongoing training/orientation / inservices for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and peri-operative staff. Serves as an educational resource for pharmacy staff, students, residents, physicians and nurses.

 

  1. Partners with pharmacy managers and peri-operative staff to develop performance expectations and provides feedback for performance appraisals

 

  1. Develop productivity measures; provides ongoing monitoring for productivity

 

  1. Ensures all state, federal or other regulatory requirements are met regarding medication security in the peri-operative areas or dispensing from the O.R. Satellite

 

  1. Detects, monitors, documents and reports adverse drug reactions, medication errors and drug recalls.

 

  1. Participate in or lead at least 1 quality improvement initiative on an annual basis

 

  1. Supervises the narcotic process for dispensing, returns and monitoring waste and insures compliance with all regulatory requirements for controlled substances

 

  1. Facilitates medication changes due to shortages, P & T formulary decisions and/or deletions by suppliers

 

  1. Works closely with pharmacy supervisors to develop or recommend changes to policies and procedures for O.R. pharmacy operations. Participates in

 

  1. Monitors physician orders to assure adherence to criteria and formulary requirements for medications used in the OR

 

  1. Provides coverage for department staffing as needed

 

  1. Provide annual documentation of professional self-development (i.e. Relevant continuing education, professional meeting attendance, certification)

 

  1. Participate in O.R. standing meetings as required
