Overview

Position Summary:
The President and CEO of Decatur Memorial Hospital (DMH) acts as the chief executive leader responsible for the overall strategic performance, operational excellence, financial health, and community impact of a 284-bed hospital with approximately 1,500 employees.  This role reports directly to the SVP and Chief Operating Officer of Memorial Health and will serve as the hospital’s primary spokesperson and liaison within the Decatur community. The President and CEO of Decatur Memorial Hospital will provide visionary leadership, ensuring DMH delivers high-quality,
patient-centered care compliant with all regulatory, safety and accreditation standards.  This leadership position is responsible for creating organizational clarity, aligning DMH’s efforts with Memorial Health’s strategic objectives and direction.  This role plays an instrument role in fostering strong, cohesive relationships with the DMH Operations Management Team (OMT), medical staff, leadership across the system, other system affiliates, and the external community.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s degree in healthcare administration, business administration or related field is required OR
  • Medical degree, with license to practice as a physician in the state of Illinois is required.

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • Fellow of American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) within three years of hire, preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of ten (10) year’s relevant leadership experience, with at least five (5) years occurring in hospital administration with progressively expanding scope and responsibility.
  • Experience in strategic and business planning and project management.

Responsibilities

Principal Duties & Responsibilities: 

  1. Provides strategic leadership to drive DMH’s successful achievement of key outcomes in quality, patient experience, workforce engagement and financial management. 
  1. Oversees DMH operations, including clinical services, assigned support areas, and administrative functions, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness of care delivery across all areas. 
  1. Conducts regular assessments of existing DMH clinical services and programs and develops plans to optimize key clinical service programs in support of local community needs. Drives growth and expansion of DMH market share while monitoring and improving key outcomes. 
  1. Maintains fiscal responsibility for DMH, including budget development, capital investment requests, and resource allocation to achieve strong financial performance. 
  1. Fosters a positive, high-performing culture which attracts, develops and retains top talent and facilitates strong colleague engagement. Oversees the DMH Operations Management Team, providing direct supervision to key leaders including the Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Medical Officer, and Vice President of Operations. 
  1. Champions continuous quality improvement efforts to drive improvements in hospital quality, patient, colleague and financial outcomes. Acts as a change agent to align system-wide transformative initiatives to the deployment of work and services at DMH. Holds self and others accountable to advancing a just culture of quality and safety. 
  1. Evaluates and acts on opportunities to collaborate across the system, including with other MH hospitals, to improve access to care and efficiency of health care resources. Develops and enhances strategic partnerships with various external individuals and groups, including but not limited to government entities and key business partners. 
  1. Nurtures strong relationships with colleagues and medical staff, establishing a high level of trust and credibility. Promotes alignment of medical staff activities with Memorial Health goals and strategic direction and drives efforts to achieve performance excellence through identifying and improving clinical processes.   
  1. Responsible for ensuring DMH provides the highest quality, most cost-effective healthcare possible, with operations compliant with federal, state, and local laws, regulations and accrediting bodies. Promptly initiates improvements and mitigation plans for compliance when necessary. 
  1. In cooperation with the DMH Board of Directors, prepares and develops annual plans and programs in accordance with long range strategic and financial objectives. Sets meaningful financial goals without compromising quality; presents and interprets programs and budget plans and progress to the DMH Board of Directors.           
  1. Provides strategic direction and support for Decatur Memorial Hospital’s Foundation. Develops effective collaborative relationships with members of the DMH Foundation Board of Directors. 
  1. Provides strategic direction for DMH’s corporate compliance program, ensuring alignment with Memorial Health’s system programs. Responsible for the conformance of Memorial Health Corporate Compliance and Ethics Program in all areas on responsibility.  Approves policies for assigned areas. Supports General Counsel and Internal Audit and Compliance by providing direct access to the Board of Directors in matters relating to corporate compliance. 
  1. Represents Memorial Health and DMH in external events and participates in community outreach, networking programs, or local civic organizations. Represents Memorial Health and DMH to governmental agencies and other organizations; remains abreast of current national and local trends and best practices. 
  1. Perform other related work as required or requested.
