Overview

Responsible for ordering, tracking, physical set building, vendor/Clinic/OR coordinating, backup inventory maintenance, instructions for use (IFU) documentation, workflow process improvements, receiving of surgical instruments, and generally maintaining an adequate level of instruments necessary for the efficient functioning of supported departments. Provides work prioritization/direction and/or maintenance of the instrumentation inventory and sterilization information within electronic instrument tracking system.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduation from high school or the equivalent required.  Associate’s degree preferred.

 

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • Certification as a central service technician is preferred.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience processing surgical instruments; or knowledge of OR instrumentation required.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience purchasing, or clinical inventory management is required.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the basic concepts of sterile processing, including knowledge of basic concepts of infection prevention and evaluation of manufacturer’s instructions for use.
  • Recognition of sufficient medical terminology in order to discuss instrument and supply needs for medical and nursing personnel.
  • Knowledge of billing and clinical inventory processes (purchasing, handling, processing)
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational, prioritization, and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  1. Serves as a lead contact person and technical resources related to Instrumentation Inventory.

 

  1. Tracks all productivity metrics related to Sterile Processing and generates reports necessary to track departmental productivity metrics to key Finance and Human Resources personnel.

 

  1. Serves as department resource for electronic instrument tracking system.

 

  1. Assists OR specialty resource personnel with open instrumentation projects, building instrument trays as needed, documenting manufacturer recommendations, and getting new trays into circulation.

 

 

  1. Maintains the instrumentation inventory and instrumentation/sterilization information in instrument tracking system.

 

  1. Assists in monitoring and evaluating the data related to maintaining standards of performance within the department that perform sterilization.

 

  1. Tracks and provides metrics related to missing or damaged instruments.

 

  1. Initiates all repairs and replacements of instruments for the Clinical Operations Division/Perioperative Services.

 

  1. Serves as the primary lead for obtaining competitive quotes on new, lost or damaged instruments to ensure compatibility with physician preferences and current tray assembly.

 

  1. Negotiates best pricing and serves as a liaison between Sterile Processing and the Finance and Value Analysis teams to ensure lowest cost is achieved for instrument purchases and repairs.

 

  1. Builds all new trays in instrument tracking system and makes appropriate changes to for any assembly changes.

 

  1. Actively works to eliminate waste and redundancy across Clinical Operations departments in the instrument inventory.

 

  1. Performs other related work as required or requested.
