Overview

Apply nursing skills by rendering direct patient care to patients of all ages and by supervising patient care activities within the Medical Imaging Department.  Maintain the continuity of patient care on all interventional procedures. Primary responsibility for US Guided phlebotomy, US Guided PIV, Midline, PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter), CICC (centrally inserted central catheters) both routine and emergent, temporary Hemodialysis Catheters (both routine and emergent) and arterial line insertions. Management of intravenous therapy services throughout the hospital, including identification of appropriate candidates, insertions, troubleshooting, protocol development, data collection and analysis of quality and costs. Serves as a consultant working directly with nursing staff to identify, educate, and promote best practice in IV therapy. Oversees successful Midline, PICC and CICC programs through collaboration with nursing departments and ordering physician. Works in a consultative role to determine appropriate line selection with physician collaboration.  Applies best practice principles for vessel health and preservation for patients.  End with: Embodies the Memorial Health Values of Safety, Integrity, Quality, and Stewardship that support our mission and vision.

Qualifications

Education:

  • BSN preferred.

 

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • Registered Nurse licensed to practice in the State of Illinois.
  • Maintain BLS CPR certification; ACLS required within 3 months of employment.
  • NIHSS Certification required within 3 months of employment

Responsibilities

  1. Develops and updates best-practice protocols for identification of appropriate patients for Midline, PICC or CICC intravenous therapy.

 

  1. Performs all routine central line dressing changes for inpatients. PRN changes upon request.

 

  1. Daily rounding on all Midlines, PICCs, CICCs, temp HD caths, and Arterial Lines for inpatients.

 

  1. Oversees implementation of IV therapy protocols on the nursing units.

 

  1. Provides de-clotting and troubleshooting assistance for existing Midlines, PICCs and CICCs.

 

  1. Provides insertion and troubleshooting of arterial lines.

 

  1. Provides ultrasound guided arterial blood gas draws.

 

  1. Provides insertion of CICC (centrally inserted central catheters)

 

  1. Provides insertion of temporary hemodialysis catheters

 

  1. Educates nursing staff on indications, patient care and troubleshooting.

  1. Mentors other therapists in skill development.

 

  1. Scans daily admission census for Midline, PICC, CICC and Arterial line candidates. Screens patients for therapy and contacts physicians for orders as needed.

 

  1. Maintains quality monitoring for Midline, PICC and CICC therapy services.

 

  1. Provides reports to Director and Nursing Leadership on utilization, quality, and costs bi-annually.

 

  1. Provide monthly audits for Directors and Nursing Leadership on CLABSI prevention compliance.

 

  1. Collaborates with physicians and/or other health care professionals in developing relationships, clinical practice policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines and age specific strategies.

 

  1. Consistently demonstrates competence in implementation of patient care in accordance with established clinical standards of care, age specific policies, and federal/state law.

 

  1. Maintains competence by participating in appropriate training and education sessions, and reviewing literature pertinent to area of expertise.

 

  1. Assist the Radiologists and technologists with the performance of angiographic and interventional studies as necessary.

 

  1. Maintain the continuity of nursing care; serve as a liaison between the nursing units and the Medical Imaging Department.

 

  1. Monitor the condition of patients while they are in the Medical Imaging Department as necessary.

 

  1. Evaluate patient preps and make recommendations for change.

 

  1. Administer contrast media, medication and other pharmaceuticals as instructed by Radiologist or attending Physician as necessary.

 

  1. Provide assistance to the technical staff by inserting catheters and providing administration of contrast media on certain patients and assisting with nurse matters of medical imaging patients as necessary.

 

  1. Monitor supplies kept within the Vascular Access Department by conducting weekly inventory and re-ordering items as needed.

 

  1. Conduct periodic in-service presentations on areas of specialty.

 

  1. Participate in special committee assignments for the Medical imaging Department and Decatur Memorial Hospital.

 

  1. Maintain active licensure and other certifications required by the Medical Imaging Department.

 

  1. Maintain an excellent guest relations rapport with patients, visitors, Physicians and fellow employees. Provide for patient and family education.

 

  1. Provide for patient and family education.

 

  1. Assist with the orientation of nurses, residents, medical students and transporters regarding vascular access or other nursing matters in the Medical Imaging Department as necessary.

 

  1. Maintain an efficient and neat working environment; maintain adequate inventory in area of responsibility.

 

  1. Performs other related work as required or requested.
