Overview

Plans, organizes and directs the administrative and technical functions of the Anatomic Pathology, Cytology Labs and Transcription Services; including budget preparation, personnel, delivery of services, quality assurance programs, accreditation and regulatory issues. Coordinates and assures effective delivery of Anatomic Pathology services for all shifts with the consultation of the Administrative and Medical Directors.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Histology, Cytology or science-related degree is required.

Master’s degree in science, business, or related field is preferred.

 

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

Certification as a Histology or Cytology Tech (ASCP) is required. In lieu of certification, requires a minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Chemical Hygiene Officer or Lab Safety Committee Chair.

 

Experience:

Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in Anatomic Pathology or Cytology Lab is required.

Minimum 3 years supervisory and/or demonstrated leadership experience is required.

 

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

Excellent customer services skills.

Microsoft Office knowledge is required.

Working knowledge of Laboratory information systems is required.

Responsibilities

  1. Manages the development, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of standards of quality for the Anatomic and Cytology Labs.

 

  1. Manages the effective delivery of Anatomic Pathology and Cytology services with the consultation of the administrative and medical directors.

 

  1. Establishes and monitors department procedures, performance evaluations, personnel management training and competency of all designated department employees.

 

  1. Formulates and manages research and development of testing, new instrument platforms and new programs based on clinical needs in consultation with the administrative and medical directors.

 

  1. Assures compliance with all local, state, federal and national regulatory agencies or organizations.

 

  1. Ensures an accurate and effective delivery system to provide timely result reporting.

 

  1. Develops effective communication and planning processes with all direct reporting staff, Histology Supervisor, Cytology Supervisor, Support Staff Supervisor, and medical directors.

 

  1. Assists with budget preparation for both capitol and operating budgets, monitors volumes for departments, and maintains accurate CPT coding and charge master review.

 

  1. Assists the Laboratory Director with implementing long-range strategic planning goals for Anatomic Pathology and Cytology Labs that support and foster those of the Medical Center.

 

  1. Monitors efficiency of supply utilization and staff productivity utilizing Lean Six Sigma techniques and goal focused improvement.

 

  1. Develops and manages departmental goals that are supportive of the organizational goals including goals of pathology group.

 

  1. Works closely with Outreach Services Manager to resolve client complaints and complex service requests.

 

  1. Assures that all activities, proposals, and presentation conform to Memorial Medical Center’s strategic plan and philosophy.

 

  1. Promotes and organizes teamwork and partnerships as an organizational approach to making quality and productivity improvements using cross-disciplinary teams and eliminating organizational barriers.

 

  1. Assumes responsibility for the implementation and conformance of Memorial Health System Laboratory and Corporate Compliance Program in all areas of responsibility.

 

  1. Ensures Anatomic Pathology and Cytology is complying will all compliance regulations for physician orders, result delivery, billing and ICD10 interpretation.

 

  1. Monitors, edits, and audits the Laboratory Electronic Test Reference Guide to ensure consistency and accurate information is provided at all times to physicians, clients, and laboratory and hospital personnel.

 

  1. Encourages professional and personal growth and motivation of employees through the development of effective orientation, in-service, and employee meetings for staff development. Serves as a role model for employees.

 

  1. Attends annual meetings for Anatomic Pathology and Cytology education and Laboratory management education.

 

  1. Manages all aspects of employee relations program within area of responsibility. Consistently and fairly interprets and enforces human resource policies of the organization. Effectively conducts employee disciplinary procedures with appropriate documentation according to current organizational policy and employee relations guidelines. Responsible for completing performance appraisals for staff on an annual basis.

 

  1. Maintains Anatomic Pathology and Cytology operational budgets and reviews budget items for upcoming fiscal years. Analyzes budget variances and initiates action to manage fluctuations.

 

  1. Performs other related work as required or requested.
