Overview

To coordinate the purchase of all pharmaceuticals and supplies for the pharmacy department.  To coordinate the return or destruction of all outdated or recalled pharmaceuticals for the pharmacy department within regulatory guidelines. To manage drug costs by maintaining compliance with purchasing contracts.  To meet all regulatory requirements and record keeping requirements for the purchase, control, return or destruction of pharmaceuticals.  To maintain an appropriate inventory balance that meets the needs for patient care and aligns with the financial goals of the organization.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Associate’s Degree in business or health care related field is desired, high school diploma required.

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • Possesses a current State of Illinois Pharmacy Technician license.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board-(PTCB) or the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) is required by the second pharmacy technician license renewal except for:
    • Pharmacy technicians who obtained initial licensure prior to January 1, 2008.
    • Pharmacy students enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy.

Experience:

  • One or more years of prior materials management experience or purchasing experience preferred.
  • Two years pharmacy experience required; two years pharmacy experience at a Memorial Health System Affiliate preferred. Proficient with computer applications and database management.
  • Demonstrates excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates excellent problem-solving ability to work through complex situations.
  • Demonstrates excellent customer relations skills.
  • Leads by example: incorporates the Memorial Health system Behavioral Standards into daily practice as reflected on prior performance evaluations- if available.
  • Heavy physical effort required.

Responsibilities

  1. Maintains proper drug control (security) according to all hospital, federal and state regulations.

 

  1. Complies with all federal, state and hospital regulatory requirements for purchase of drugs, sale of drugs, transfer of drugs, and or waste of drugs.

 

  1. Maintains optimal inventory to care for patients while meeting optimum annual turns.

 

  1. Implements continuing opportunities for inventory reduction and cost containment.

 

  1. Assures adequate stock rotation to minimize waste due to outdated medications and supplies.

 

  1. Coordinates completion of the annual physical inventory with pharmacy director and all vendors.

 

  1. Processes invoices and credits in a timely manner, meeting hospital requirements.

 

  1. Coordinates and oversees Monthly Interdepartmental Billing

 

  1. Communicates all product changes to pharmacy director in regards to contract changes, NDC changes and/or price changes. Collaborates with Information Systems to review wholesale price updates after application.

 

  1. Coordinates product / NDC changes with Pharmacy Director as it pertains to Bedside Barcode Medication Administration (BBMA) process. Ensures bar-code integrity prior to releasing product for use.

 

  1. Collaborates with the Director of Pharmacy and Information Systems on the build of all new medications into the Health Information System.

 

  1. Oversees the return goods process through a Reverse Distributor.

 

  1. Coordinates supply of specialty chemotherapy in conjunction with Director of Pharmacy and Specialty Clinic Infusion Unit staff.

 

  1. Coordinates and responds to all drug recalls and documents action take.

 

  1. Coordinates direct orders, allocation shipments with distributors and manufacturers to mitigate or reduce the impact of drug shortages. Performs counts of stock levels on hand for drug shortage products, and alerts managers when action levels are reached. 

 

  1. Constantly monitors replenishment orders for unexpected back-orders, implements appropriate mitigation strategies, and communicates with management and staff as appropriate.

 

  1. Coordinates with the Director of Pharmacy to oversee the 340B drug pricing program at Passavant

 

  1. Coordinates with Director of Pharmacy on Pyxis installation and Expansion Upgrades and Manages the console formulary for new medications or medications to be removed

 

  1. Processes and Reviews Charge Summary Report, Charge Exception Report and Pyxis Manual Charge Reports

 

  1. Coordinates with Director of Pharmacy on design, build, and management of changes to Anesthesia Case Trays, Crash Cart Trays, and any other pharmacy medications box or tray throughout the facility.

 

  1. Serves as a general pharmacy technician as needed.

 

  1. Serves as a role model for all staff.

 

  1. Performs other duties as assigned.
