Gross and describe small surgical specimens, maintain automated tissue processors, and assist pathologists and pathologists’ assistants in processing larger tissue specimens to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences required.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Required to participate in an on call rotation with a 30 minute response time to the gross room

1. Log specimens on computer system, retrieve surgical number, and charge for procedures performed.

2. Assist pathologists and pathologists’ assistants with surgical specimens and autopsy procedures.

3. Dictate gross descriptions on small/uncomplicated surgical specimens.

4. Prepare surgical and autopsy material for processing on VIP tissue processor.

5. Maintain and change chemicals on automated tissue processors.

6. Operate formalin and reagent recyclers.

7. Assist pathologists with preparation of frozen sections by performing microtomy using frozen section cryostats.

8. File and retrieve specimens, slides and paraffin blocks.

9. Rotate on-call duties as required.

10. Procure tissues and related materials for SIU teaching.

11. Assist and prepare for laboratory inspections.

12. Provide general maintenance and cleanliness of equipment.

13. Order supplies for the department.

14. Record workload documentation.

15. Assist with the instruction of new employees.

16. Maintain quality assurance records.

17. Maintain hazardous waste manuals and MSDS sheets to comply with OSHA regulations.

18. Work with pathologists on related duties as necessary.

19. Promote good customer service at all times.

20. Ensure that professional and personal activities conform to Memorial Medical Center’s strategic plan and Mission, Vision, and Values.
