Overview

 

Prepares patients for and conducts routine EEG procedures; collects data pertinent to the interpretation of test results. 

 

Essential Functions and Job Duties

 

  • Performs EEG procedures in at least one modality and in accordance with the standards and protocols of the laboratory.
  • Performs procedures according to ASET guidelines.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of neuroanatomy, physiology, basic electronics, pattern recognition, EEG instrumentation, and pharmacological conditions that influence EEG procedures.
  • Performs standard EEG recording with appropriate activation procedures.
  • Demonstrates skills needed to perform bedside recordings.
  • Follows procedural protocols to ensure collection of appropriate data.
  • Documents routine observation.
  • Summarizes patient neurological status and clinical history; explains procedure to patient and patient’s family.
  • Documents patient history gathering appropriate information from patient, patient records including neurological symptomology and medications.
  • Attends to patient needs while in the department.
  • Verifies identity of patient and provides adequate patient ID on all studies.
  • Evaluates the patient for comprehension and ability to cooperate.
  • Testing preparation procedures
  • Measures and applies electrodes in a timely manner and with appropriate impedances.
  • Measures according to the international 10/20 system.
  • Demonstrates competency in electrode application techniques.
  • Implements alternative methods or adjusts controls to obtain optimal recording.
  • Recognizes artifacts (patient, instrumental, or environmental); documents, eliminates and takes proper measures to monitor the artifact.
  • Maintains clean and neat work area, provides routine equipment maintenance.
  • Stocks room and supplies before and after procedure.
  • Keeps equipment clean and in proper working order.
  • Verifies appropriate calibrations and make adjustments, if necessary.
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems and repairs or reports to supervisor promptly.
  • Service management and professional issues
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Ensures patient safety at all times; demonstrates knowledge of appropriate actions to take during emergency situations.
  • Complies with electrical safety requirements.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of departmental infection control standards.
  • Complies with department guidelines for handling infectious waste and hazardous materials.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills with patient, families, lab staff, physicians, and other hospital staff.
  • Follows department and hospital policies.
  • Takes responsibility for professional growth.
  • Reviews studies with Director and or interpreting physician and implements suggestions for quality improvements.
  • Learns to perform advanced EEG procedures.
  • Expands knowledge by participation in conferences, in-service and independent learning.
  • Performs various office duties.
  • Demonstrates basic computer skills.
  • Answers phones, logs information into databases, enters charges for procedures, archives records, prints daily schedule, arranges and coordinates inpatient testing.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

Education and/or Other Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent.  Competency in EEG testing.  Current CPR certification.

Environmental Factors

This position is performed within an environment of  occasional exposure to irritating, unpleasant, or hazardous elements or conditions.  Exposure to hazardous or potentially injurious elements or conditions is limited.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • The employee will frequently be required to lift, push or pull weight of 5 to 15 pounds.
  • While performing the duties of the job the employee is required to walk, bend or stand.
  • Ability to transport and assist with transfer of patients for testing procedures.
  • Ability to move quickly to patient’s side during an emergency.
  • Ability to attend to visual details.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to receive and comprehend written and oral communications.

  • Comprehend written basic instructions, safety rules, office memoranda at a high school graduate level.
