Overview

The primary function of the Pastoral Care per diem pool is to help maintain 24-hour availability of pastoral care to emergent clinical situations.  Per diem personnel will normally function in an on-call capacity when staff chaplains are not immediately available.

 

The chaplain-on-call will assist patients of all ages and their family to meet their psychosocial, emotional and spiritual needs during their hospitalization resulting from illness or injury.  Services will be provided to persons of all faith traditions according to departmental policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education:

  • A./B.S. degree or equivalent, preferably in psychosocial and/or theological fields. Three (3) or more years of experience in pastoral care, ministry or related area may be considered in lieu of educational degree.
  • It is preferred that the candidate has completed one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education, or equivalent educational experience. If not, the candidate will be asked to complete a questionnaire relating to the theory and practice of Pastoral Care.

Responsibilities

  1. Be available during designated hours to receive patient/family referrals from staff chaplains and other appropriate hospital personnel for crisis intervention, bereavement care and other emergent needs for emotional and spiritual support.

 

  1. Provide ministry to the specific spiritual needs of persons in crisis.

 

  1. Respond promptly to codes, ER trauma cases, and in-patient deaths as requested.

 

  1. Monitor and/or follow-up specific on-going pastoral needs from previous shifts.
