Overview

To participate in the daily preparation of routine and special histology procedures including gross examination, fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy and routine and advanced staining techniques.  May study histotechnology and complete in-house training in order to take the ASCP certification exam after one year of on-the-job work experience.  (Qualifications as outlined by ASCP Certification Board). 

Qualifications

Education:

Minimum of 60 semester hours of college level coursework or Associate’s degree (preferably in Life Science or related field) with 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry coursework required (must be combination of both subjects, but not required to be equal parts).  Bachelor’s degree with 12 semester hour requirement fulfilled is preferred.

 

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Basic laboratory skills required.

Responsibilities

  1. Under general supervision performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by a pathologist. Activities may include specimen accessioning, grossing, frozen sectioning, embedding, microtomy and routine and specialized staining.

 

  1. Utilize LIS system and other computer systems necessary to perform duties.

 

  1. Sort and assign cases to pathologists.

 

  1. Operate, clean and maintain all histology equipment and troubleshoot minor equipment failures. Document remedial actions such as repairs and repeated tests.

 

  1. Prepare solutions and reagents for manual and automated stain processes.

 

  1. File blocks and slides according to department procedures.

 

  1. Adhere to quality control policies and document all quality control activities.

 

  1. Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.

 

  1. May participate in department on call and weekend rotation schedules as deemed appropriate by the Histology Supervisor.

 

  1. Order supplies and maintain inventory.

 

  1. Maintain a clean and organized work area.

 

 

  1. Performs other related work as required or requested.
