Overview

Performs testing in all areas of the lab including moderate to high complexity testing.  Performs quality control necessary for the level of testing reported. Performs venipunctures, arterial punctures, and skin punctures competently and expediently.  Has thorough knowledge of test requirements.  Assists in clinical Laboratory as needed.  Performs blood cultures and collection of blood samples.  Responsible for all bedside testing, maintaining supplies needed for testing, education, competency evaluation, and proficiency testing. Maintains all records to meet CAP compliance for point of care testing. 

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Biology required.


Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • Certification by a national registry for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCP or equivalent) as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist.


Experience:

  • 1 year Phlebotomy experience required.
  • 3 years of Medical Technologist experience in a high complexity lab required.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.

 

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Interest in clinical science.
  • Ability to work with clinical teams outside the laboratory.
  • Good manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work in high stress situations.
  • Physical requirements include bending, stooping, reaching, and carrying objects that may weigh up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for all bedside testing performed by clinical staff including supplies, education, competency, evaluation, and proficiency testing.

 

  1. Performs various laboratory procedures in all areas of the laboratory.

 

  1. Performs venipunctures, capillary punctures, and arterial punctures to obtain blood specimens for testing.

 

  1. Performs Swabbing technique of various kinds to collect specimens.

 

  1. Performs designated quality control functions.

 

  1. Specimens are obtained from infants, children, adolescents, adults, and older adults.

 

  1. Performs all assigned tasks under the supervision of Laboratory Administrative Director who is the Point of Care Director.

 

  1. Performs Quality Assurance functions.

 

  1. Participates in all GPE initiatives from leadership down to lab subcommittee GPE initiatives.

 

  1. Maintains all regulatory documents for CAP regarding accreditation for staff performing POCT.

 

  1. Performs other functions as designated.
