Clinical Dietitian

Provides for the optimal nutrition care for inpatients and outpatients and integrates that care with other treatment modalities. Conducts comprehensive nutritional assessment and education for patients at high nutritional risk including those in intensive care and those on TPN. Interprets biochemical and clinical data, identifies and monitors patients at nutritional risk. Provides a variety of nutritional therapy interventions to resolve nutritional crisis and to ensure health maintenance.



  • Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics/Nutrition is required.

Master’s Degree in Dietetics/Nutrition is strongly preferred.


  • Registered Dietitian status or eligible for registry by the Commission on Dietetic Registration is required.

Licensure in State of Illinois as a Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist is required within 3 months of placement in position


  • Three years’ experience as a clinical dietitian with responsibilities in clinical care setting is strongly preferred.

Diet Instruction/Nutrition Counseling experience is preferred

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • A high level of self-direction to work independently is required.
  • Knowledge and experience to develop medical care plans for oral, enteral and parenteral nutrition therapy in complex patients are required.

Effective written and verbal communication skills are required


  • Assesses and evaluates the nutritional status of individual patients in health and disease throughout the life cycle, and develops and recommends a course of nutrition therapy in order to influence the course of treatment.
  • Evaluates the effects of nutritional intervention on the nutritional status of patients/clients in order to provide feedback regarding the appropriateness of various treatments.
  • Attends patient care rounds and consults with physicians, nursing personnel and other members of the health care team to provide information regarding patient’s dietary history, to discuss unusual dietary needs or preferences of patients, to resolve problems, and to implement changes.
  • Communicates and monitors implementation of the nutrition care plan, and documents all aspects of nutrition care to ensure that regulatory agencies’ standards are met and to provide communication to all team members. Arranges for follow-up nutrition care subsequent to discharge or transfer.
  • Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates nutrition education for patients/clients, including the identification of appropriate settings and materials to assure that necessary nutrition education is provided with regard to the needs of the individual.
  • Communicates pertinent information to other health care professionals and educates the practitioners.
  • Utilizes motivational interviewing and demonstration and evaluation techniques to assess learning.
  • Participates actively in initiatives in Diet Manual, Enteral Formulary, Patient Education materials, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Accepts and documents verbal and telephone orders from physicians for orders related to the patient’s nutrition care plan.
  • Collaborates with community groups in the planning, organization, implementation, and evaluation of nutrition education initiatives for the community including Schools, ALMH Marketplace, Workplace, Community Groups and local Health Department.
  • Participates in provision of Support Groups for Weight Loss and Diabetes Education Programs.
  • Participates in development and revision of Cardiac Rehab and Congestive Heart Failure Clinic diet education materials and provides diet instructions.
  • Actively serves as a Clinical Nutrition resource for Cafeteria Services Manager and Staff.
  • Performs other related work as required or requested
